Story
In the near future, governments are supposedly at peace, but a shadow war, fought by private military corporations, is raging. You, along with a myriad of comrades and enemies alike — up to 256 in all — are dropped into this unprecedented war. To start off you must prove yourself as a member of your 8-man squad, fighting for one of the PMCs. With enough experience you may even become an elite fighter or earn the right to lead a squad, platoon or ultimately an entire army of players. Can you, will you follow orders? Either way your destiny and those of 255 other fighters awaits on the battlefield of MAG.

Gameplay
In MAG players take on the role of a member of a private military corporation (PMC), in a fictional Earth future. Like most MMO games, as well as some modern shooters, the ultimate goal of action is the leveling up of your character, in this case through success in combat against other factions made up of individual online players. At the initial level players choose the PMC they will be aligned with, the physical characteristics of their character, initial available weaponry, etc. and hit the battlefield with other squad members within a persistent online environment. Along the way you will utilize a diverse skill tree to develop your character's abilities and skills at tactics and weapons using experience points that are accumulated in campaign and mission play in the name of your faction. These points are given out in various increments for all manner of action, whether that be objective completion, or individual actions in combat. Once characters reach a certain level they are eligible to take on command duties. These duties range from leading an eight-man squad, all the way to overall command of more than 100 online players. Orders are communicated and strategy developed via voice chat and other functionality. Success in command positions allows for access to special "leadership bonuses" that not only can improve your abilities, but also in many cases, that of the individuals and units under your command.

So, how does one give orders to human individuals online? Just as you would to AI (artificial intelligence) characters. The beauty of MAG is that players are free to ignore orders issued by superiors at any time. Experience point totals, the nuts and bolts of character leveling, are higher for successes achieved through orders that follow the chain of command though. War, especially that featuring multiple factions, can be fought in many ways, and in MMO gameplay world of MAG it's up to you to decided the path you'll follow.

Private Military Corporations (PMCs)
Bound by the terms of the terms of the Millennium Accord, which prevents defense forces from crossing borders, nations with the MAG game world turn to the services of Private Military Corporations (PMCs) to secure interests abroad. The leading PMCs compete for contracts across the globe. Each of these maintains its own battlefield philosophy and approach to military operations. It's up to each player to choose his/her loyalty. Some of the factions players can expect to see include:

The Raven insignia from MAG Raven
Based in Vienna, Austria, Raven Industries, GmbH provides specialized military services using precise, cutting-edge equipment and advanced tactical coordination.
The S.V.E.R. insignia for MAG S.V.E.R. (Seryi Volk Executive Response)
S.V.E.R is based in Grozny, in the Chechen Republic. Unconventional in their look and a fierce fighting style, S.V.E.R operative consist of former soldiers and private citizen, some with rumored criminal backgrounds.
The Valor faction insignia from MAG Valor
Founded by former US Army officers, Valor Company, Inc. offers an experienced team of veterans drawn from US, British and Mexican forces. The company is headquartered in the Alaskan wilderness.

3 out of 5 stars Don't get this game if you don't want to join a "clan"   March 17, 2010
B. Mark (USA)
I was rather disappointed in this game not from the game play itself and lack of a single player option, but more from the players on the servers. First of all if you don't want to join a clan then don't get this game. The an orginized clan will dominate you if you are not on a squad that knows what to do. On another point if your in a squad that has clan mates in it and you don't do what your squad mates determine to be the best plan of attack (rush the objectives) you WILL get either kicked, TK'd or verbally harassed.
Let me start by some history. I am relatively new to console FPS games, but am a very experienced PC FPS player ranking in the top 5% in the world in games ranging from Tribes to Battlefield 2 on the PC. In other words...I know what I'm doing. I decided to get a PS3 and try some FPS games and MAG seemed like a good choice. I was initially underwhelmed by the game play but as I unlocked more weapons and skills the game got better. The only thing is that the players haven't changed. For example if you don't stick with the group and essentially bum rush the target people will get pissed. Even if they are getting mowed down they want you there with em to rez and get mowed down with em (having a 4-18 kill to death ratio isn't a good thing even though it has no bearing on the score or winning). Now my position of choice is sniping. I'm good at it and think it is invaluable to have a good sniper covering your flanks. Most players in this game don't understand that. It is a good thing if a sniper can cover your ENTIRE right flank from attack and leave you an opening to attack. If you are like me and choose this route be prepared to be TK'd multiple times (some people actually go out of their way to TK you) or yelled at by other squad mates. Even after explaining to them what I'm doing they still don't care.
Even if you join the mass lemming suicide of bum rushing targets you will more than likely get shot in the back by a teammate so he can have your weapon because he is more important than you. It will happen to you at least once every other match.
People may say that I am being sensitive or that it was an isolated incident...but it wasn't. It happened multiple times on multiple days. In short...I'm returning this game and trying BFBC2 on the PS3. If the players are the same then its back to the classy players on PC.

3 out of 5 stars Not Modern Warfare!   March 15, 2010

I bought this for my son because some of his friends were playing it on line; he gave it a few tries, but said it wasn't as fun as Modern Warfare 2. He and most of his friends went back to MW2 and haven't launched this one in quite a while. I am not an expert, but visually, both games seemed to be a similar format.

5 out of 5 stars A FPS that demands teamwork and strategy   March 13, 2010
Matthew Stephens (Spokane Valley, WA United States)
I had been following MAG since it was first announced by Sony. I got to demo it at PAX in Seattle in 2009 and instantly pre ordered it when I got home that evening. MAG is the essence of what all FPS's should be. MAG is structured to where you feel like you are in an anctual war and not some stupid 6 on 6 run and gun arena. Every noise you hear in the game is user generated. Every action has a consequence. You are forced to make descisions in game of how you want to play. Do I just go for kills or do I repair a bunker, heal a team mate, defuse or set a charge? There are so many things going on in a game and it is amazing. I have never had so much fun in an online shooter before. It does have its flaws but overall, it is an amazing game that is definately worth checking out. A 256 player chain of command war...what more could you want?

If you do get this game...GET A HEADSET lol. It is so much more fun if you have one. If you don't have a headset, do not be any type of squad leader. Squad leaders need to be able to issue commands and communicate with other squads and platoons.

5 out of 5 stars Massive Action Gaming is Right!   March 13, 2010
Jovan Rodriguez (East Coast)
MAG is not the generic first person shooter. MAG takes a substantial amount of plays 64 to the incredible amount of 256 and pits them in a Private Military Company Rivalry achieved by no other game previously or currently. The average number of players in an FPS (first person Shooter) most always tops out at 32. MAG seamlessly achieves a greater number. The game is not about running and gunning as many opponents as you can. It is objective based demanding that the separate squads work as a team to help their respective platoons attain certain goals. This ultimately leads their PMC to victory over the opposing team. Each of the three factions are unique and have many characteristics that will appeal to any players. MAG lives to it's name.

5 out of 5 stars Awesomeness!   March 11, 2010
J. Allen (Japan)
MAG is an experience that can't be missed. Playing with 256 other players on one map the size of all the MW2 maps put together is just awesome. The customization you can do for your character and weapons is really sweet. If you own a ps3 then buy this game
